BHAGAT BHATTS
Bhatts are a community like who like balled singers who sing with the
accompainment of a musical instrument - Muslim humorists and penegyrists,
bard cum genelogists, used to earn their living by singing . Their profession
has been to sing their compositions in praise of Maharajas, rich and famous and
warriors of their deeds.
Punjab Bhatts are KOSHAH Brahmins by caste and their ancestors
were said to have living on the bank of Surasti and other side were known as
Surasat and of the other side Gaur Brahmins.
From all Bhatt family some were living in Sultanpur and well- known among
them was Bhikha. His sons, grandsons, nephews were devotees of Gurus and their
123 Chhands are there in Shri Guru Granth Sahib.
Bhatts whose compositions are embodied in Shri Guru Granth Sahib.are:
1.Kalh 2.Dass 3.Gayan 4.Martha 5.Kirat 6.Kalshahr
7.Balh 8.Jalap 9.Nath 10.Salh 11.Bhikha 12.Jallan
13.Ganga 14.Harbans 15.Jalh 16.Jalp 17.Bhallah.
Kalh Bhattji
Kalh Bhatt was well known poet of Mughal times and wrote a book "Dill Raj Bansani."
Kalh wrote in praise of Guru Angad Devji (10), Guru Amar Dasji(9), Guru Ram Dasji (13)
and Guru Arjun Devji (12) chhands.In all these 44 chhands(verses) Kalh Bhattji has sung
in praiseof these Gurus. Kalh bhatt is not singing praise of any individual
personality but praise of the spiritual light of supreme power of which has
been given light from ages, and that was why he has seen other prophets
and enlightened persons with the same devotion and respect.
He wrote in his praise of Baba Nanak emphasising that he enjoyed both
royality and reunciation.

Salh Bhattji
Salh bhatt was one of the bhatts who has written one chhnad ( a form of peotry) in
praise of Guru Amar Dasji and two in praise of Guru Ram Dasji. He says that brave personality
Guru Amar Dasji is destroyer of evil and has praised royality of Guru Ram Dasji.

Harbans Bhattji
Out of 11 Bhatts whose compositions are included in Shri Guru Granth Sahib,
Harbans was a devotee of Guru Arjan Devji. He, at the time of passing away of
Guru Ram Das and installation of Guru Arjan Devji, composed two verses(swaeyas).
He says that Guru's Light is immortal and like Ganges and keeps on flowing; bathing
in which washer has been always washing away dirty mind.
Bhatt Kiratji
According to the account of Bhatts, Kirat was son of Bhikha. He wrote 4
chhands in praise of Guru Amar Dasji and 4 in praise of Guru Ram Dasji.This
great poet was a good warrior also. He died while fighting for Guru Hargobindji
in the war against Sulhe Khan in Amritsar on 17 Baisakh 1691.

Bhatt Jalapji
Jalap was one of 11 Bhatts whose 5 chhands are found in Shri Guru Granth
Sahib.From this it appears that he had gone to Goindwal with his father Bhikha. Jalap's
own thinking was that body and organs are only useful if they have been in service of Guru
and heart is pure only if Guru resides in it.

Bhatt Nalhji
Of the 11 Bhatts whose compositions have come in Shri Guru Granth Sahib,
Nalh is one who has written 16 chhands only in praise of Guru Ram Dasji.From this it
is infered that perhaps this Bhatt appeared in the court of Guru Ram Dasji and after
having a glimpse of embodiment of renunciation and riches said " Guru is philopher's
stone touching which iron becomes gold." In some chhands he has called himself "Das".From
this some mistake this verse by Das Bhatt but the compositions of chhand shows that it is
NALH's. He has used the word because of humility.

Bhikha Bhattji
Bhikha, chief of 11 Bhatts, was resident of Sultanpur and a devotee of Guru Amar
Dasji, and all other Bhatts came to have a glimpse of Guruji with him. His two chhands are
found in "swayes third Guru" in which he writes how after one year of search.Satguru's
protection was found.

Mathra Bhattji
Mathra was a learned Bhatt who wrote 7 chhands in praise of Guru Ram Dasji , 7 in praise
of Guru Arjan Devji. It appears that after observing the mysticism of Gurus he wrote that
these prophets had come for the solace of world.

Bhalh Bhattji
Only one swayei of Bhalh Bhatt in praise Guru Amar Dasji found in Shri Guru Granth
Sahibji. From this it appears that he was a learned poet. He has written that spring
rain drops, spring flowers, sun rays and ocean waves are limitless ; the same way
greatness of Guru Amar Dasji cannot be described.
